Madrid

Capital Departure

Pick up your car in Madrid and spend the afternoon in the city. The Prado is non-negotiable — two hours with Velázquez and Goya, and you understand Spain. Tapas in La Latina in the evening, then an early start south tomorrow.

Toledo

City of Three Cultures

An hour south of Madrid, Toledo rises on a granite outcrop ringed by the Tagus — one of the most dramatic city entrances in Europe. For centuries a place where Christians, Muslims, and Jews lived and worked together. The cathedral, the El Greco paintings, and the synagogues are all unmissable.

Consuegra

Don Quixote Country

Drive south into the heart of La Mancha. Consuegra has twelve whitewashed windmills on a ridge above the town — exactly the giants that Quixote charged. Walk the ridge in the wind and suddenly the novel makes total sense. The landscape is flat, dry, and quietly epic.

Córdoba

The Great Mosque

Arrive in Córdoba and walk straight to the Mezquita — the mosque-cathedral that is one of the architectural wonders of the world. The forest of 856 columns, the Moorish arches, the Christian nave grafted into the center: it's overwhelming. Wander the Jewish quarter in the evening and eat well.
