Barcelona

City Before the Coast

Pick up your car in Barcelona and spend the first afternoon in the city. Sagrada Família, a walk through El Born, and dinner near the waterfront are enough to set the mood. Tomorrow the coast road begins.

Tossa de Mar

The First Cape

Drive north along the coast, stopping at Tossa de Mar — the walled medieval town on a headland is the classic Costa Brava image. Swim in the coves below the walls, then continue north via Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc before settling in Begur for the night.

Cadaqués

Dalí's Whitewashed Village

The road to Cadaqués winds through the Cap de Creus headland: 15 km of hairpin bends with nothing but sea on both sides. The village at the end is deliberately inaccessible — no bus, a narrow approach — which is why it remains extraordinary. Visit the house where Dalí lived and worked for most of his adult life.

Cap de Creus

Land's End

Drive to Cap de Creus — the easternmost point of mainland Spain, where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean. The wild, wind-blasted landscape of the natural park is unlike anything else on the coast. Then head back south to Barcelona or cross into France. Either way, the drive is the thing.
